AJ Roberts - Visual Coach
Mr. Roberts graduated from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education in 2014 and was a four-time recipient of Dean’s List honors. He continued his education at California State University Los Angeles, earning a Master of Music in Conducting in 2022. During his time at CSULA, he studied conducting under Dr. Emily Moss.
Mr. Roberts began his teaching career in 2014 as the Band Director for grades 5-12 in the Gettysburg School District in Gettysburg, South Dakota. After two years, he moved to Los Angeles, California, to teach at Dorsey High School, where he directed the marching, concert, and jazz bands, and also taught AP Music Theory and Music Technology. From 2018 to 2022, he worked in the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District, serving as a Band Director for grades K-8 at Lassalette, California, and Sunset Elementary Schools, while also assisting with the La Puente High School Marching Band. He then taught at Allapattah Flats K-8 in Florida, where he grew the program from 85 to over 200 participants in three years. During his time there, he organized multiple field trips to theme parks including Busch Gardens, Disney World, Sea World, and Universal.
Mr. Roberts is currently the Band Director for grades 6-8 at Oxford Preparatory Academy Middle School in Laguna Hills, California, where he teaches Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Marching Band.
Throughout his career, his ensembles have received numerous honors. His students have earned Superior and Excellent ratings at a variety of festivals and competitions, including the SCSBOA Hacienda Heights Festival, the LA Instructional Summit, and Music in the Parks. In 2025, his Advanced Band received a Straight Superior rating at Music Performance Assessment and took first place with a Superior rating at Music in the Parks, where his Jazz Band also received first place with an Excellent rating.
