Michael Salgado - Brass Tech
Michael Salgado is a native of Southern California but actually began his musical career in the small town of Clovis, New Mexico where he found his passion for playing tuba, thanks to his middle school director switching him from trumpet. After his middle school years, Michael moved back to Southern California in 2011 and graduated from Tustin High School in 2015. While in high school, Michael participated in the marching band, concert band, jazz band, and indoor drumline. His musical studies continued on to Irvine Valley College, where he was a recipient of the Tanya Reed Gardner Music Endowed Scholarship and the Ikemi-Murakami Instrumental Music Scholarship. He graduated from Irvine Valley College in 2019 and is now at California State University, Fullerton to obtain his B.M in Tuba Performance and B.A. in Instrumental Music Education.

On his own accord, he has attended ensemble rehearsals with the CSUF Symphonic Winds as well as the CSUF Tuba Studio ensemble during his time at Irvine. In his years at Irvine Valley College, he has participated as principal tubist in the IVC Wind Symphony, IVC Symphony Orchestra, as well as singing as a baritone in the IVC Master Chorale from 2017-2018. His additional ensemble experience outside of the academic realm includes being the principal tubist in the Orange County Youth Symphony Orchestra, and a member of the Placentia Symphonic Band in 2017. He has also been a member of the 2015-2018 Music Association for California Community Colleges Intercollegiate Bands, and the 2016 and 2017 California State University Fullerton Intercollegiate Band. He has also been given the opportunity to participate in the CBDNA National Music Conference in 2017 and the CBDNA Western/Northwestern Regional Conference in 2018. He currently plays with the CSUF Wind Symphony, the top band in the School of Music.

At IVC, Michael studied under Dr. Anthony Mazzaferro, professor emeritus at Fullerton College and the conductor of the Frederick Fennell Wind Ensemble at the Orange County School of the Arts. He will be studying with Dr. David Holben in the Fall 2019 semester at CSU Fullerton and is currently studying under Gabriel Sears, tuba professor at the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at CSU Long Beach. This last summer, Michael participated in the Colburn School’s Adult British-style Brass Band course to study chamber and ensemble repertoire with like-minded professional, semi-pro, and experienced brass players under the direction of USC instructor and tuba pedagogue, Doug Tornquist.

Michael receives opportunities to do freelance work in the Orange County area such as playing in multiple brass quintets and playing in musicals. Outside the performance scene, he also gives his time working at the IVC Performing Arts Center working as a stagehand during the music venues. He has taught at Los Flores Middle School, Tesoro High School, La Quinta High School, and Don Bosco Technical High School. He currently maintains a small but steady studio of tuba players in the Capistrano and Saddleback Unified School Districts.

Michael currently resides in Fullerton, CA.
